The Sea of Galilee into which flows the Jordan river (sourced from 9,000 foot Mount Hermon to the north) is about 700 feet below sea level, then the river continues flowing out of the Sea of Galilee down to Jericho at 850 feet below sea level, about twenty miles to the northeast from Jerusalem (which is at 2,500 feet), near Jericho where Joshua leading the Israelites came across the Jordan to establish Gilgal, there the Tabernacle set-up and from where Joshua sieged the Canaanite cities, the first, Jericho.
