Why would the “New World” have be named for the first name of a ship’s navigator, Amerigo, if not that it was a clumsy adaptation of the name of the tribe Americos in the land of Amuraca (Amorites) whom Christopher Columbus and later the Conquistadors encountered in far northern South America?
