Looking down on the earth at either pole, the precession cycle of its axis is like a clock, the hand of the clock the axis, so ancient observers of the horizon could measure distance by that clock according to apparent movement of the constellations along the horizon because of axial precession, at the rate of 72 years/degree, the basis of geometry (see Page at right Great Pyramid for Navigation).
