In northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar i Sharif in the valley of the upper Amu Darya (Oxus) river is the site of Sham i bala, where was a sun temple to Sham (Shamash), or Shem, one of Noah’s three sons, that rich land later known as Balkh, Bactria to the Greeks, now known as Shambhala.
