The iron age Jews knew of Spain not only as Canaanite Ezpanna (meaning hidden place), also Iberia for Heber, namesake of the Hebrews, and Sepharad for Hesperides who were said to be granddaughters of Atlas by his son Hesperus which means evening, “at the edge of the world” to the uninformed ancients.
