Paul Manafort got-the-job-done leading Team Trump in the process of securing enough state delegates to win, and Manafort having worked well for Reagan and Dole was probably the only person of such stature available to Trump at the time, so Trump took what he could get. No doubt many more would love to be Trump’s campaign manager for his 2020 reelection run, but back in 2016 it was slim-pickins.
