Gilgals were huge stone-wall enclosures seemingly shaped like a sandal sole (“footprints”), the first about eight miles northwest of Jericho from which the Israelites conquered Jericho of the Canaanites circa 1400 b. c., and from there gilgals were built near conquered Shechem in the north to Hebron in the south, all within the so-called West Bank of the Jordan river these days under dispute.
