The ancient nations which surrounded the Promised Land were named for figures in Genesis 10, names such as Misraim for Misr (Egypt) to the south, Asshur for Assyria to the east, and Aram for Aramaea to the north, where would eventually be called Israel was Canaan, the land promised to Abraham and his grandson Jacob whose name was changed by Elohim to Israel about four hundred years before Joshua would lead the Israelites across the Jordan river into what then would become Israel.
