Presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016 needed an establishment-accepted politician to serve as his running mate, so he picked boring (yet feisty) Mike Pence who had little following nationally but was an accepted “conservative” leader seen a solid stabilizing force on the Republican ticket, thus Pence’s presidential ambition for 2024 is really just an exercise in self-delusion.
