If Ukraine Wants Peace Then Why Talk to Join EU Provoking Putin Further Why Not Stay Unattached as Independent Nation?

How is talk about Ukraine joining the EU supposed to reduce the tensions between Ukraine and Russia? Shouldn’t Zelenskyy be signaling to Russia that all he wants is an independent Ukraine at peace with her neighbors, not aligned just independent and willing to fight for the freedom she seeks?
