Abram (later named Abraham) lived in the town of his brother Haran on the Balikh River just north of where today is the border of Turkey and Syria, in Aram-Naharim, land named for Aram (a brother of Arphaxad who was the ancestor of the Hebrews) and for Nahor (Abram’s grandfather), nearby the town of Sarugi named for Serug the great grandfather of Abram; to the east Palugi named for Peleg, the great great grandfather of Abram, where the Khabur (named for Peleg’s father Heber) joins the Euphrates.
