John Kirby has been saying for two weeks that the number of Americans stranded in Afghanistan could not be determined because the number was fluid (as if fluidity would preclude an estimate), though which he did provide in a leading generality that “several thousand” were stranded, foreshadowing Biden’s statement today that almost 6,000 Americans have been evacuated, within the ballpark of Kirby while though in reality perhaps 3,000 remain stranded, maybe more.
