U. S. presidents in modern times usually have won their reelections, such as Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, and G. W. Bush, only Carter and George H. W. Bush having broken the pattern, because Carter was such a horrible president (and the challenger Reagan so strong) and because Ross Perot, so hating H. W. Bush, ran in 1992 to siphon off enough votes from Bush for Clinton to have won.
