The Akkadians (Assyrians) called the people of lower Mesopotamia the Sumerians, for Sumeru or Meru, the supposed stairway to heaven (the Tower of Babel built by the Kushite Nimrod), while the Sumerians called themselves the Black Headed People (“Sag-gi-ga”) in the land of the civilized lords (“Ki-en-gir”), the black Kushites who built the city states of Sumer, during the Ice Age when the land was verdant.
