The ancient Greeks knew the seafarers of the Levant as the Sidonians (for Sidon a son of Canaan) during the Ice Age, later those seafarers known as the Phoenicians for Phoenix a son of Agenor, after the Ice Age, who based at Tyre from which the word Syria derives, that island which had been a hill several miles from the sea until circa 1400 b. c.
