If the writers of the 14th Amendment had been told that a hundred fifty years later it would be cited to legitimize people traveling from other countries just to birth their children for U. S. citizenship, and that illegal aliens would claim U. S. citizenship for their children birthed in the U. S. by claiming that the 14th Amendment applies, those guys in 1868 doing right for the recently freed slaves would have winced in anguish, to exhort Congress to make a law against that distortion of the intent of the 14th Amendment.
