Of course president Trump didn’t assume everyone would forget that he had endorsed Luther Strange by erasing his tweets of support for Strange, if nothing else drawing more attention to them, so perhaps it’s Trump’s way of saying that he supported Strange because he was asked to by those with whom he was trying to pass healthcare reform, that now out the window but surely to be revisited if not before the 2018 midterm elections then surely after.
