Near the egyptian town of Abu Kir, on the coast of the Mediterranean at the mouth of the extinct Canopic distributary of the Nile river, are the ruins of Canopus built in honor of Menelaus’s navigator Canopus circa 1180 b. c., and nearby where was built the sanctuary of Hercules (the Heracleion) who had lived about a century previously, so the extensive submerged ruins five miles away in Abu Kir Bay are of the city of Menouthis, not Canopus or Heracleion, nor Thonis who was a regent of Egypt having been the figure of limited authority in that time of anarchy known as the bronze age collapse, in the aftermath of the Ice Age actually.
