Andre Chouraqui in his History of the Jews in North Africa says the Berbers trace their ancestry back to the land of Canaan, born out by the Jerusalem Talmud (although extra biblical) saying that Joshua circa 1400 b. c. sent out a warning to the Canaanites before the invasion of the Promised Land, telling them to leave or stay in peace, so the Girgashi (Girghasites, progeny of Canaan) sailed away to Afriki.
