Because the U. S. Constitution prohibits the federal government from establishing a national religion, godless materialism has not been established, so seeing the religious roots of our national character (for instance the Ivy League colleges were founded as biblical schools), that the Bible, education, and politics are intertwined in the United States should not surprise the many Europeans still baffled by the Tea Party movement and the Trump presidency which it produced.
