Tradition without proof says the canaanite king Jebus (a son of Canaan) founded what would be called Jerusalem, meaning city of peace, because Shem had set up residence there too becoming known as Melchizedek (meaning king of righteousness), the Hebrews (progeny of Shem) probably having become the dominant population in the city and surrounding area. The Jebusites about a thousand years later had gained control of the city where some land was sold to King David to begin the site for the Temple.
