Impeding Auto Traffic in the Big Cities is Not Part of the Right to Free Speech Protesting so Why is It Allowed?

Since when have protesters in the U. S. been allowed to clog big city streets exercising their right to free speech? Aren’t we free to assemble but not in the middle of the street?
