Although camels (their kin llamas and alpacas) were present in North Africa before 1000 b. c., they were not used as pack animals, donkeys the pack animal of choice, because the Ice Age ended circa 1500 b. c. when the drying began, fully desiccated allowing only camel passage by circa 1000 b. c.
