Unicorn means one horn for the variety of rhinoceros with one horn, others with two (one smaller), corn and ceros of the same root as kernel or grain, a little horn so to speak, for a cornucopia of produce in a “horn of plenty,” the unicorn as a horse symbolic of fruitfulness since medieval days if not before.
