Apparently having heard about Saint Brendan the Navigator’s voyage circa 600 a. d. across the Atlantic to a land where he discovered a big river flowing to the west (the Ohio), Christopher Columbus came to Galway, Ireland, from where had sailed Saint Brendan over eight hundred years previously, to recruit William Ayres to assist with the navigation across the Atlantic.
